how to recycle evo hair products + packaging

each year the beauty industry produces about 120 billion units of packaging, with an estimate of only 9 per cent being recycled and the rest going to landfillโ€ฆ donโ€™t worry, weโ€™re just as shocked as you are. at evo, we want to bring about change for the better and have a commitment to people and the planet that underpins everything we doโ€ฆ which isnโ€™t easy for a brand that creates things for a living. we believe that sustainability is a journey of progress, not a path to perfection.

as part of our commitment to continue evolving on our sustainability journey, evo hair bottles are now made with a percentage of pcr (post-consumer-recycled) plastic and evo fabuloso tubes are made with a percentage of pir (post-industrial recycled) plastic, so that weโ€™re producing less virgin plastic.

travel-size products

for the most part, our pint-sized products can be recycled in the same way as their full-size counterparts.

  • tubes: tubes and screw cap lids can be placed in your kerbside recycling.
  • aerosols: the same goes for travel-size aerosols. simply place bottles, applicators and lids in your kerbside recycling.
  • spray bottles: the bottle itself can be recycled; however the spray pump will need to be placed in your regular bin or kept for reuse.
  • jars + pucks: both the jar and lid can be placed in kerbside recycling.

brushes + combs

are hair brushes recyclable? we canโ€™t speak for all brands, but we can tell you what to do once youโ€™re finished with your evo hair brushes.

  • roy detangling comb: this wooden comb can be recycled. check with your local recycling centre or waste management authority for the 411 on how to recycle wood in your area.
  • all other brushes: unfortunately, evo brushes cannot be recycled as they are mixed media, meaning they would need to be disassembled into different components โ€“ and this would be too difficult to achieve at home. however, if your brush is still in relatively good condition, you could give it a new home by donating it.

what canโ€™t you recycle?

at evo, we are continually looking for ways to optimise our products and packaging, in order to become the most responsible version of ourselves.ย that said, there are a few exceptions where evo products or packaging canโ€™t be placed in your local kerbside recycling bins, including:

  • pumps + droppers: unfortunately, pumps and droppers attached to evo products cannot be recycled; however, we recommend that you keep them to reuse.
  • brushes: see the brushes section above for the full run-down of what to do with your old evo brushes.

understanding packaging recycling symbols

did you know that our packaging has symbols to help you identify the type of material and whether it can be recycled?ย flip over your evo hair bottle, tube or spray and youโ€™ll find a resin identification code to identify the type of plastic and which part of the packaging it is referring to. if a product or pump canโ€™t be recycled, youโ€™ll also see a bin symbol.

how to recycle expired products

forgot about *that* product you left right in the back of your bathroom cabinet, that expired a long, looooong time ago? hereโ€™s what to do next.

if thereโ€™s a substantial amount of product left unused, you can dispense the product out onto wastepaper or newspaper, before allowing the packaging to dry out. then dispose of the paper in your waste bin and recycle the packaging as per the instructions set out above. itโ€™s as simple as that!

the final word

we're so proud to have earth-conscious consumers like yourself who are dedicated to doing the right thing. so, go forth with your newfound knowledge and get recycling.

faqs about hair product recycling

  • no, curbside recycling is the preferred method. some salons also have systems in place for accepting plastic packaging from customers to be added in with their in-salon recycling program.

  • if rinsing still leaves some residue this is ok, our products are water soluble and will be cleaned off in the recycling process.

  • the recycling facility sorts the plastic into matching streams and matching colors, they then clean and grind the plastic into small pieces where it is then blended with new plastic and sold as a raw material to packaging manufacturers.

  • yes and no, packaging smaller than 5cm can slip through sorting grates, meaning it will be removed from the recycling stream. that's why we recommend small items like caps are placed into larger bottles or tubes made of the same material.
